Almost everybody at some point in their life has a run in with a water heater. At some point the water heater pilot light will go out. Sometimes you may just need to clean certain parts of the unit so that they will work properly again. If you have tried all of these things and the pilot light is still not lighting, chances are you have a damaged thermocouple. What Is a Thermocouple? The thermocouple in a water heater is a small piece of metal that is located next to the pilot light. It measures the temperature to make sure that the pilot light is lit. Without the thermocouple, a dangerous buildup of gas could cause an explosion. This is because the thermocouple will make sure the pilot light is lit by measuring the temperature. If the pilot light goes out, the thermocouple will sense the change in temperature and the gas supply will be turned off. How to Install a New Thermocouple For most water heaters, the thermocouple is a standalone part that can be replaced very easily. A universal thermocouple can be purchased. On other water heaters, you will need to purchase a pilot assembly which includes the pilot light, thermocouple and igniter. Read your water heater documentation to determine which part you need to purchase. Once the part is in hand, you are ready to begin the installation. There is usually a knob where the gas is coming into the water heater. Turn off the gas supply to the water heater. Remove the outer door and inner doors.
